About Swarthmore’s Varied Architectural Styles

The area that would become Swarthmore was originally a grant of farmland given by William Penn to the Quakers. That all changed with the building of the train station and the founding of Swarthmore College in 1864. Properties around the college were scooped up by those associated with the college, and residential districts began to grow in the late 1800s. By 1893, the Borough of Swarthmore was officially incorporated.

While Swarthmore College continues to shape the town’s character, many people moved here during the 20th century because of its friendly atmosphere and proximity to Philadelphia. The town’s varied past means you’ll find a unique mix of architectural styles, including split-levels, Cape Cods and more contemporary properties.

FAQs

Swarthmore’s architecture reflects its development as a college town and commuter suburb. While many homes were built in the early to mid-20th century, there has been a more recent demand for contemporary properties over the last 25 years. That said, you’ll find a mix of styles, including Colonial Revival, Cape Cods, split-level, ranch style and more modern developments.

The simple answer is that it depends. Creating a budget for a large home remodel relies on many factors, including the size of your project, customization options and your home’s age. A little bit of research can give you a rough idea of the cost. But if you want a more concrete estimate, we can help you figure out a budget long before construction begins.

The best way to stick to your remodeling budget is to know exactly what you want. Ask yourself:

  • What are my main goals for this remodel?
  • What am I willing to compromise on?
  • What are my non-negotiables?

With these considerations in mind, the team at COCOON can help calculate the costs and provide you with a more detailed estimate.

Homeowners in Swarthmore and throughout the Philly suburbs want more personalized spaces that complement their lifestyles, add functionality for their family and showcase their unique style preferences.

For example, a thoughtfully designed kitchen makes every moment more joyful — from morning coffee to holiday gatherings. Another area of focus is the primary bathroom, with homeowners transforming theirs into a spa-like retreat.

Other trends include converting the basement into a bonus living space, creating an open concept layout on the first floor, or adding more personality to each corner of the home. At COCOON, we’d love to hear your ideas and plans and see how we can help.

A major home renovation typically takes several months to complete, and every project is unique. At COCOON, we do everything in our power to keep the renovation process simple and streamlined. Our team will keep you in the loop with daily updates via our user-friendly app, so you can track our progress from start to finish and stay informed at every step.
