The area that would become Swarthmore was originally a grant of farmland given by William Penn to the Quakers. That all changed with the building of the train station and the founding of Swarthmore College in 1864. Properties around the college were scooped up by those associated with the college, and residential districts began to grow in the late 1800s. By 1893, the Borough of Swarthmore was officially incorporated.
