Job Description

The Lead Carpenter is directly responsible for on-site carpentry construction (rough and finish) and is required to possess a high level of carpentry skill and ensuring that company policies and procedures are upheld. This position is responsible for maintaining customer satisfaction throughout the project within the means of the construction contract. The Lead Carpenter is held accountable to the schedule. Carpenters and Carpenter Apprentices report directly to the Lead Carpenter to achieve the goals set before the team. The Lead Carpenter reports directly to the Production Manager regarding the totality of his/her position within COCOON but follows the direction of the Project Manager when on job sites.

Hours:

The Lead Carpenter’s starting time is typically 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with one 30-minute lunch. The work week is normally Monday through Friday but because of the responsibilities of leading construction crews, these hours are somewhat flexible. Pay is on a bi-weekly pay period.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Site work, demolition, framing, finish carpentry, and various other residential construction tasks as needed.
  • Create a team dynamic and culture that yields completed phases within the timeframe requested in a safe manner
  • Supervise laborers, carpenters, and trade partners (trade partners if requested by a project manager), including participating in performance reviews. Make work assignments, monitor quality, and motivate Lead in a way that naturally yields the respect of those who report to him/her.
  • Train Carpenter Apprentices into Carpenters
  • Train Carpenters into Lead Carpenters
  • Request help as required and anticipate the need for additional carpenters, so they can be scheduled in a timely fashion.
  • Complete work to maintain schedule and budget goals.
  • Ensure job site safety, protection, and maintenance of company tools, and enforce all job site rules.
  • Inspect all equipment for proper safety features and ensure unsafe conditions are corrected.
  • Update the customer with only the immediate tasks for which he/she is responsible if asked by the customer. All other inquiries from the customer must be directed to the Project Manager.
  • Update Buildertrend only at the Project Manager’s direction
  • Read and interpret paperwork, including all plans and specifications, purchase orders, Trade Partner work orders, and cost updates. Bring questions, discrepancies, and unusual conditions to the attention of the Project Manager and Design Team.
  • Provide necessary information to the Project Manager for Change Orders. You must understand the change order procedure and ensure that all change orders are written up and signed via Buildertrend prior to ordering and building.
  • Understand the scope of the work and discuss all requests for additional work with the Project Manager and Design Team.
  • The Lead Carpenter is responsible for only accomplishing work within the documented scope. Less slip more grip.
  • Lead Carpenters are responsible for maintaining correct dress and behavior standards for self and their subordinates on the job.
  • Responsible for ensuring end of day procedures are handled. Clean up, weather protection, and security.
  • Clock in and out using the ‘T-sheets’ app.
  • Attend meetings requested of him/her
  • Needs to be respectful of all Project Managers and their personal style of leading projects – working together to achieve the same end goal.
  • Miscellaneous other duties as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years as lead carpenter, 8+ years of carpentry experience
  • Good communication, job coordination, and supervisory skills
  • Extensive rough and finish carpentry skills and superior knowledge of construction methods and techniques
  • Must have a good working knowledge of related building trades
  • The ability to interact and communicate well with your crew, trade partners, and the customer
  • Teaching skills
  • Must be available for extended work hours as required
  • Reliable work vehicle
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work on a consistent basis, including lifting 100 pounds
  • Comfortable on ladders and scaffolding (heights)
  • PA driver’s license and good driving record

Minimum Tools Required:

Basic Hand Tools such as hammer, tape measure, speed square, nail apron, etc. Circular saw, Sanders, Hand Rip Saw, Stapler, Drill, Miter Saw, Compressor, Ext Cords, Air Hoses, Portable Table Saw, 2′ and 4′ Level, Framing Sq., Router, Saber Saw, Sawhorses, Recip. Saw, Power Plane, Step Ladder, Nail Guns
