The Architectural Styles of the Main Line
Did you know the railroad that the Main Line region is named after was originally the first government-built railroad in the world? It began as the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway, with its first train hitting the rails in 1832. Later, it became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s main line. Today, the railroad is SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale line, a busy commuter route.
Not surprisingly, many housing styles sprouted up over time on the Main Line. While there are plenty of grand estates in the area, there are also more modest homes built during the post-war suburban housing boom. Popular styles from this era include split-level, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes. While these houses have charm, they often lack the layouts, space or functionality that today’s homeowners desire. That’s where a personalized remodel comes to the rescue.
